CockroachDB’s official distributed-SQL session explains resilience, consistency, horizontal scaling, geo-distribution, locality, replicas, read/write behavior and distributed SQL execution. It is useful technical context for evaluating CockroachDB Cloud architecture, while plan-specific Cloud pricing and controls remain grounded in current pricing documentation.

Port107 notes
CockroachDB Cloud is a managed distributed SQL service for transactional applications that need resilient database operation across infrastructure failures and, in selected configurations, multiple regions. The main buying question is how much distributed-database capability the application actually needs and which operating model best matches that requirement.
Current plans include Basic from $0 per month with a monthly allowance of request units and storage, Standard in preview with provisioned compute from $0.18 per hour for two vCPUs, and Advanced from $0.60 per hour for four vCPUs. The plans differ in compute model, cloud and region support, private connectivity, availability and compliance controls, so pricing and architecture have to be evaluated together.
A recent prospective-buyer discussion highlights difficulty estimating request-unit costs for join-heavy workloads on the consumption-priced tier. It is an individual evaluation question, not a measured cost study. It identifies a concrete pre-purchase task: benchmark representative queries and transactions so request-unit consumption can be compared with provisioned alternatives using the application’s real access patterns.
CockroachDB Cloud is a strong candidate when distributed SQL resilience, regional placement or managed scaling solve a real application requirement. Teams should validate transaction patterns, latency targets, multi-region needs, network topology and cost behavior before choosing between elastic request-unit pricing and provisioned compute.
