AI coding comparison

Claude Code vs Codex

Compare two coding agents around the way you actually work: terminal and app surfaces, included usage, what happens when limits are reached, and the environments each product supports.

2profiles available

Both products have Port107 profiles. This comparison adds a dated decision layer for pricing, access, limits and operating surfaces while deeper corpus coverage continues to grow.

The practical differences

Pricing and usage policies change quickly. These observations reflect current vendor documentation reviewed on August 20, 2026.

Decision pointClaude CodeCodex
Primary coding surfaceBoth can work from a developer environment; Codex currently spans more first-party surfaces.Terminal-first interactive agent, with supported IDE integrations.Available across CLI, web, IDE extension and the Codex app with ChatGPT sign-in.
Individual subscription accessSubscription inclusion and overage systems differ, so compare the plan you already use before comparing raw usage cost.Claude Code is included with Claude Pro ($20/month), Max 5x ($100/month) and Max 20x ($200/month).Codex is included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu; additional credits can extend eligible plans.
Usage and limitsNeither product has one universal “messages per month” number that applies to every workload.Pro and Max usage is shared across Claude and Claude Code. Pro has five-hour session resets plus a weekly limit; Max raises session capacity to 5x or 20x Pro and also uses weekly limits.Usage depends on task size, model and execution surface. Eligible ChatGPT plans use a shared agentic allowance; flexible usage then draws from credits where available.
Usage beyond included allowanceHeavy users should evaluate both included capacity and the marginal cost of continuing after the included allowance.Paid Claude plans can enable usage credits after included limits; API-key sessions are pay-as-you-go at API rates.Eligible plans can purchase credits after included usage. The current Codex rate card meters most plans by model-specific input, cached-input and output token credits.
CLI and automation shapeClaude exposes a particularly explicit command-line contract; Codex pairs CLI work with a broader first-party multi-surface agent experience. The claude CLI supports interactive sessions, resume/continue flows, print mode, JSON output, model selection, tool permissions and MCP configuration.Codex provides a native CLI alongside IDE, web and app surfaces; the same product family also supports parallel agent workflows and automations.
Supported local environmentsCheck the exact surface you intend to use, especially on Windows or managed enterprise environments.Anthropic documents macOS 10.15+, Ubuntu 20.04+/Debian 10+, and Windows 10+ through WSL or Git for Windows. The Codex app launched on macOS; CLI and IDE access are separate surfaces. Environment support can differ by surface.
Current lifecycle noteModel availability is time-sensitive. Product identity should be separated from whichever models are currently offered inside it.Claude Code is an actively supported Claude product with subscription, Team and Enterprise access paths.Codex is an actively supported OpenAI product. OpenAI says GPT-5.4 and GPT-5.4 mini retire from ChatGPT-authenticated Codex on August 31, 2026.

Claude Code

Plan capacity is shared

Claude Pro and Max subscribers use one allowance across Claude and Claude Code. Anthropic documents five-hour session resets for Pro plus weekly limits, while Max raises session capacity and retains weekly controls. Users can enable paid usage credits after included capacity.

Codex

Credits follow actual model usage

OpenAI's current flexible rate card maps Codex credits to input, cached-input and output tokens by model. Task cost therefore varies with model choice, context, output and execution behavior. Included plan usage is consumed before eligible credit balances.

Decision shortcut

Start with your working surface

Choose the environment you expect to use every day, then compare the included capacity and overage model for that workflow. A terminal-heavy session and a parallel multi-agent workflow can produce very different usage economics.
